For most of my life, I thought education was something you could document. You went to school, earned a degree, took a course, received a certification, and added it to your CV. The more qualifications you collected, the more evidence you had that you were learning and progressing. There was something reassuring about being able to point to a piece of paper and say, "I know this because I studied it."
I still believe formal education has enormous value. My own education has shaped the way I think and has opened doors that might otherwise have remained closed. But after many years of working, changing roles, working across countries and cultures, managing people, dealing with difficult situations, and simply getting older, I've started to think that some of the most important things I've learned are precisely the things I could never put on my CV.
There is no certification for learning how to deal with disappointment. There is no university degree for knowing when to speak and when it is better to listen. There is no professional qualification for recognizing a bad working environment before you've spent too much time in it. And there is certainly no LinkedIn badge for learning how to become comfortable with uncertainty.
Yet these lessons have probably shaped the person I am today more than many of the qualifications I can list under "Education."
The people who educate us without knowing it
Over the course of a career, you meet an enormous number of people. Some become mentors, some become colleagues, some become friends, and some simply pass through your professional life for a short period of time. What I've come to appreciate is that almost all of them leave you with something, whether they intend to or not.
I've learned a great deal from good managers. I've learned how much trust can change the way a team works and how powerful it can be when someone gives you responsibility without constantly looking over your shoulder. I've also learned from difficult managers, although those lessons tend to be harder to appreciate at the time. Sometimes the most useful thing a bad manager can teach you is exactly what kind of manager you don't want to become.
I've worked with people who were exceptionally talented but difficult to work with, and others who weren't necessarily the most technically impressive people in the room but made everyone around them better. That distinction has stayed with me. Competence matters, but so does character. Intelligence matters, but so does empathy. Being able to do something exceptionally well is valuable, but knowing how to bring other people along with you is an entirely different skill.
None of those lessons appear on a CV.
You can write "leadership experience" under a job title, but that doesn't tell someone how you actually behave when a project goes wrong or when someone on your team makes a mistake. You can list "team management," but that doesn't tell anyone whether the people who worked for you felt trusted, supported, or respected.
Those are things you learn through experience, and often through watching other people.
Failure teaches differently
A CV is naturally designed to make failure invisible. We list the successful campaigns, the major clients, the awards, the promotions, the measurable results, and the projects we're proud of. We rarely include the ideas that didn't work, the decisions we got wrong, or the opportunities we should have approached differently.
That's understandable. A CV is a professional document, not a diary.
But if I were trying to understand someone's actual education, I would want to know about those things.
I've made mistakes throughout my career. I've underestimated projects, misjudged situations, trusted the wrong people, said yes when I should have said no, and occasionally spent far too much time trying to make something work simply because I didn't want to admit that it wasn't working.
At the time, none of these experiences felt educational. They felt frustrating, expensive, embarrassing, or disappointing. The lesson usually came later.
You can read about risk management, but nothing teaches you about risk quite like making a decision and living with the consequences. You can study communication, but nothing teaches you about communication quite like realizing that something you thought was perfectly clear was understood completely differently by the person sitting across from you. You can take a leadership course, but nothing quite prepares you for the responsibility of having other people's work depend on the decisions you make.
Failure has a way of removing the theory from the equation.
It forces you to pay attention.
Travel can be an education too
Some of the most valuable lessons I've learned have come from working and traveling across different countries and cultures. Spending time outside the environment you consider normal has a way of exposing assumptions you didn't even realize you had.
I've worked across the Middle East and North Africa for much of my career, and one of the things that experience has taught me is that context matters enormously. In marketing, we often talk about localization as if it is a fairly straightforward process. Take something that worked in one market, translate it, change a few visuals, adjust the targeting, and launch it somewhere else.
Real life doesn't work that way.
People aren't simply audiences waiting to receive messages. Culture influences how people interpret those messages, how they make decisions, how they build trust, how they respond to authority, how they interact with brands, and what they consider persuasive.
The same principle applies outside marketing. Spending time in another country can make you realize that the way you think about work, family, ambition, success, time, hospitality, or even happiness is not universal. It's simply the version you've become accustomed to.
That realization can be uncomfortable, but it is also incredibly valuable.
Sometimes education is simply discovering that your way isn't the only way.
You learn what you don't want
When you're younger, you tend to think education is about figuring out what you want to become. You choose a field of study, start a career, set goals, and gradually try to move toward some version of success.
With enough experience, I think you also become educated in what you don't want.
There are workplaces I wouldn't want to recreate. There are management styles I wouldn't want to adopt. There are professional relationships I now recognize as unhealthy much earlier than I would have in the past. There are opportunities that look impressive on paper but no longer appeal to me simply because I've learned what they actually require.
This kind of knowledge is rarely celebrated.
Nobody announces that they've successfully eliminated three possible career paths from consideration. Nobody puts "learned what kind of environment makes me unhappy" on LinkedIn.
But knowing what you don't want can be just as important as knowing what you do.
In fact, sometimes it is easier to move forward once you've stopped trying to convince yourself that something is right for you simply because it looks good from the outside.
Time gives you an education that no course can provide
There are things I understand now that I couldn't have understood ten or fifteen years ago, even if someone had tried to explain them to me.
That's one of the frustrating things about experience. Sometimes you can't shortcut it.
Someone can tell you that not every opportunity is a good opportunity, but you might not truly understand it until you've accepted a few that looked attractive and discovered that the cost was much higher than the benefit.
Someone can tell you that your job isn't your identity, and you might agree with them intellectually. Then one day your circumstances at work change and you suddenly realize how much of your sense of self had become connected to a company, a position, a team, or simply the feeling of being needed.
Someone can tell you that you shouldn't compare your career to other people's careers, but it's difficult not to when you see someone you started with becoming an executive while you're questioning your own direction.
Eventually, time turns advice into understanding.
That may be one of the biggest differences between information and wisdom. Information can be given to you. Wisdom usually has to be experienced.
The education of knowing yourself
Perhaps the most important education I've received has been learning how I actually operate.
I've learned what motivates me and what drains me. I've learned which environments bring out my best work and which ones make me less effective. I've learned that I need a certain amount of variety and intellectual stimulation to stay engaged. I've learned that I enjoy solving problems more than simply maintaining systems that already work.
I've also learned that some of the things I once thought were important aren't as important to me anymore.
That's an interesting part of getting older. Your definition of success changes.
When you're starting out, success can be about getting the right job, earning more money, gaining a better title, or working for a recognizable company. Later, you might start valuing autonomy, interesting work, good people, flexibility, peace of mind, or simply having enough time and energy left for the rest of your life.
None of these preferences are necessarily better than the others. They're just different.
The important part is knowing your own definition instead of automatically adopting somebody else's.
Your CV tells a very incomplete story
I've always found CVs slightly strange when you think about what they're actually trying to accomplish. A few pages are supposed to summarize years, sometimes decades, of someone's professional life.
We list the companies we've worked for, the positions we've held, the degrees we've earned, the skills we've developed, and the accomplishments we're proud of. All of that is useful information, but it still tells only a fraction of the story.
A CV doesn't tell you about the project that taught someone resilience. It doesn't tell you about the manager who changed the way they think about leadership. It doesn't tell you about the difficult year that forced them to reconsider what they actually wanted from their career. It doesn't tell you about the failure that made them better at making decisions or the colleague who taught them how much a good team can matter.
It also doesn't tell you how someone behaves when things go wrong.
And that, in my experience, can be more revealing than almost anything else.
I remember people I've worked with less for the titles on their CVs than for how they behaved under pressure, how they treated people, whether they listened, whether they took responsibility, whether they shared credit, and whether they made the people around them better.
Those qualities are difficult to quantify.
They are also difficult to fake over a long period of time.
We never really stop being students
Perhaps I've become less interested in collecting qualifications because I've become more interested in collecting understanding.
There is a difference.
Qualifications can prove that you completed something. Understanding changes how you behave.
The education that matters most to me now happens everywhere. It happens in conversations, in mistakes, in unfamiliar places, in difficult projects, in relationships, in moments of uncertainty, and sometimes in simply paying attention to what happens around me.
Every job has taught me something. Every country I've spent time in has challenged some assumption. Every difficult situation has given me information about how I respond under pressure. Every person I've worked with has, in some way, shown me something about leadership, communication, ambition, patience, or myself.
I don't think formal education stops being important. I just don't think it is where education ends.
The most valuable things I've learned are often the things I can't prove I studied.
I can't put "learned how to deal with disappointment" on my CV. I can't list "became comfortable with uncertainty" as a professional certification. I can't add "learned when to walk away" under skills.
But those lessons come with me everywhere.
And perhaps that's the point.
A CV records what you've done. Your life reveals what you've learned.
