I've spent much of my career marketing across the Middle East and North Africa, and I've watched a lot of global brands and international marketers arrive in the region with a playbook that worked beautifully everywhere else and then quietly underperform here. Not because the marketers were bad, they were often excellent, but because they treated MENA as a single translation exercise: take what works in the home market, swap the language, adjust the media plan, and go.
MENA punishes that assumption. It's one of the most diverse, fast-moving, and misunderstood marketing environments in the world, and the things that make it distinctive are exactly the things a global playbook tends to flatten. Here's what those playbooks most often get wrong.
Treating MENA as one market
The first and most fundamental error is in the acronym itself. "MENA" groups together countries that differ enormously in wealth, media habits, dialect, religiosity, regulatory environment, consumer behavior, and digital maturity. A campaign built for the Gulf can land completely differently in the Levant or North Africa. Purchasing power, platform preferences, the role of Arabic versus English, the tone that reads as aspirational versus alienating, all of these shift as you move across the region.
A global marketer who says "our MENA strategy" the way they'd say "our German strategy" has already made a category error. The UAE and Saudi Arabia alone are distinct markets with distinct consumer psychologies, and that's before you reach Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, and the rest. The brands that succeed here treat MENA as a portfolio of related but genuinely different markets, and localize accordingly. The ones that struggle build one regional campaign and wonder why it only works in one country.
Getting Arabic wrong, or ignoring it
Language in this region is not a simple translation problem, and treating it as one is one of the most visible mistakes global brands make.
There's Modern Standard Arabic, which is formal and universally understood but can feel distant in consumer marketing. Then there are the dialects, Gulf, Levantine, Egyptian, Maghrebi, which differ enough that content feeling native in one can feel foreign in another. And there's the constant question of when to use Arabic at all versus English, which varies by market, by audience, by category, and by the specific feeling you're trying to create.
The lazy global approach is to run English everywhere, or to machine-translate into stiff Modern Standard Arabic and call it localized. Both leave value on the table. English-only marketing quietly signals that the brand didn't think the local audience was worth speaking to properly. Bad Arabic signals the same thing more loudly. Getting this right, knowing which language, which dialect, which register, for which audience and which purpose, is a genuine competitive advantage in a region where many international competitors get it wrong. It's also, incidentally, where a marketer who genuinely understands the region and its languages adds disproportionate value.
Underestimating digital sophistication
There's a persistent, outdated assumption that MENA is a digitally lagging region. The opposite is true in much of it. The Gulf in particular has among the highest social media and smartphone penetration rates in the world, and consumers here are extremely digitally sophisticated, early adopters, heavy users, comfortable across platforms that global marketers sometimes underweight.
Platform preferences also don't map neatly onto Western assumptions. The mix of what matters, and how each platform is actually used, differs from the home-market defaults a global playbook encodes. A marketer who assumes the regional audience is behind, or who ports over a platform strategy built for a different market's habits, misreads the environment badly. The audience here is often ahead, not behind, and they notice when a brand treats them as an afterthought.
Misjudging cultural and religious context
Global campaigns frequently stumble on cultural and religious context, sometimes in small ways that erode trust and occasionally in large ways that cause real damage.
This isn't only about the obvious pitfalls. It's about a hundred smaller judgments: the rhythm of the year and how occasions like Ramadan reshape consumer behavior and media consumption, the values that resonate versus those that quietly repel, the humor that lands versus the humor that offends, the imagery and family structures and social norms that a home-market creative team wouldn't think twice about but that read very differently here.
The brands that do this well don't treat cultural context as a compliance checklist of things to avoid. They treat it as a source of genuine connection, understanding what the audience actually values and building from there. Ramadan, for instance, isn't just a scheduling constraint; handled with real understanding rather than opportunism, it's one of the most powerful moments for meaningful brand connection in the entire calendar. Handled cynically, as many brands do, it reads as hollow and gets noticed as such.
Assuming trust and influence work the same way
How trust is built and how purchase decisions are influenced can differ here from the home-market model, and global playbooks often import their assumptions unexamined.
Personal relationships, community, word of mouth, and specific forms of social proof can carry more weight in parts of this region than the more individualistic, transactional models that underpin a lot of Western marketing theory. Influencer dynamics, the role of family and community in decisions, the way credibility accrues, these don't always follow the imported template. A campaign built on the assumption that the buyer is an isolated individual making a rational solo decision can miss the actual social texture of how choices get made here.
The correction isn't complicated in principle, it's to study how trust and influence actually operate in the specific market rather than assuming they operate as they do at home, but it requires the humility to check the assumption in the first place, which a confident global playbook tends not to do.
What the successful approach looks like
The brands and marketers who succeed in MENA share a few habits, and none of them is exotic. They're just the habits that a one-size-fits-all playbook skips.
They localize genuinely, treating each market as its own thing rather than as a translated version of a central campaign. They invest in real language and cultural fluency rather than machine translation and stereotype. They respect the audience's digital sophistication instead of talking down to it. They engage with cultural and religious context as an opportunity for connection rather than a minefield to tiptoe through. And they build on how trust actually works here rather than importing an assumption about how it works elsewhere.
Underneath all of it is a single shift in posture: from "how do we adapt our global campaign for MENA" to "what does this specific market actually need and value, and how do we build from that." The first posture treats the region as a destination for an existing message. The second treats it as a place with its own logic worth understanding on its own terms.
The opportunity in getting it right
Here's the encouraging part. Because so many global brands get MENA wrong, getting it right is a genuine advantage rather than merely table stakes. In a region where a lot of international marketing feels imported, generic, or slightly off, the brand that feels genuinely native, that speaks the right language in the right register, respects the context, and understands the audience, stands out sharply.
MENA is not a hard market because it's backward or closed. It's a demanding market because it's diverse, sophisticated, and quick to notice when a brand hasn't done the work. That demand is exactly the opportunity. The marketers who treat the region with the seriousness and specificity it deserves don't just avoid the failures of the global playbook, they build something their less-attentive competitors can't easily copy: a real relationship with an audience that knows the difference.
