Watching TV Increases Risk of Heart Disease

Step away from the television... TV is not your friend. In fact, according to a new study, it's your mortal enemy. Researchers have discovered that every hour per day spent watching television increases your chance of dying from heart disease by one-fifth. We all know a sedentary lifestyle can lead to disastrous health problems, but this new study shows even the most physically fit are at risk for heart disease when they spend a good amount of time watching TV. "Even if someone has a healthy body weight, sitting for long periods of time still has an unhealthy influence on their blood sugar and blood fats," says Professor David Dunstan, the study's lead researcher. Australian scientists, lead by Prof. Dunstan, looked at about 9,000 people over the course of six years, grouping them into categories depending on how much television they watched. The group that watched the most (four or more hours a day) were 80% more likely to develop heart disease and die from ...

24 Weird and Unique Hamburgers

A hamburger is not inherently an exotic food. However, in the hands of the right creative (or crazy) individual, that single slab of meat and two buns can become nothing short of spectacular. Herein lies the importance of the chef. As KoldCast’s resident chefs Ivan and Sergei teach us in their experiments with raw sugar, food is not only what you make of it, but how you make it. In honor of bootstrap cooking, the possibilities of the burger, and our very own Ivan and Sergei, KoldCast presents you with the weirdest and most unique hamburgers on Earth – or at least on the Internet. Just make sure you don’t read the rest of this article on an empty stomach. Enjoy! 1. The NutBurger Hailing from Butte, Montana, this burger is nutty! Many profess that it’s like eating a sundae topping on a burger…if your Sundae topping consists of mayo and nut clusters. 2. The Fattymelt Simply put, it’s a burger crossed with grilled cheese. This heart attack-worthy burger originates from the Mossy Cre...

Fattest Kid in the World

The child eats 10,000 calories a day, she cannot walk or bear physical strain and her cardiovascular system is at risk. Seven-year-old Jessica Gaude differs greatly from her pals. With 222 kilograms, she is the fattest child in the world. She eats 10,000 calories each day in Coca-Colas, 15 hamburgers with fries and several kilograms of chocolate. What she eats in one day some children eat in half a year. Her breakfast consists of white bread, potato chips and two litres of coke. And she wants more. When she last visited the doctor four years ago she had 110 kilograms. Unfortunately, she can no longer run and instead of walking she drags herself on the floor. Under such bodily weight her bones have already become distorted. Mother Carolyn gives her daughter whatever the child wants. In the first week after she was born, when the baby cried because of stomach pains, the mother calmed her by feeding her with a bottle beca...

Bitch's Sidekick

So I am taking this poetry writing course this semester with Dr. D and my first assignment is to write a prose poem. The poem below is inspired by a true story, hope you like it. Bitch’s Sidekick [working title] Dear Z. Or it should probably be just Z; you are not that dear to me anymore.  I know I swore that I would never talk to you again; I am writing this to tell you that you are not the only one who was lying. Remember when you asked me if those cheesy garlic bread are gonna make you fat, and I said no. I lied. Remember when you told me that my friend’s ugly girlfriend is much prettier than you, and I said don’t be ridiculous. I lied. Remember when that guy came up to you and said you looked hideous in that dress, and I said he’s just jealous. I lied. Remember when you told me that your face was so swollen from studying and lack of sleep and I said you never looked better. I lied. A puffer fish was never as puffy. Remember when you asked me if your make-up looked good an...

Putting Liposuction Leftovers to Good Use

Ever wonder what happens to all the fat sucked out during liposuction? If you feared it was going to waste, worry no more. According to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the gelatinous material can be converted into embryonic stem cells . “We’ve identified a great natural resource,” said Stanford surgery professor and co-author of the research, Michael Longaker. The physician also called lipo leftovers “liquid gold.” Changing regular adult stem cells to embryonic stem cells poses a number of problems. Four genes, known as Yamanaka factors, need to be expressed to change adult cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS), which mostly resemble embryonic stem cells. Doctors often experiment with skin cells for this procedure. But like some adults, mature cells are resistant to change. It takes skin cells about three weeks in the lab to convert to iPS cells. The Stanford researchers looked at adipose, or immature fat cells, which lie within a labyri...
