YAHOO: If you want to avoid the worst-paying college degrees, think twice before choosing a college major that involves children.
Included among the 20 worst-paying college degrees are elementary education, special education, social work and child and family studies. That's the conclusion of the latest annual study of college degrees by Payscale, Inc. that compiled starting and mid-career pay for dozens of college majors.
Child and family studies earned the honors as the worst-paying college major. The average graduate earns a beginning salary of $29,500. What's equally discouraging is that the salary of someone in this field will barely budge after 15 years in the profession.
Food is another common theme for students who major in the worst-paying college degrees. Students who earn degrees in horticulture, dietetics and the culinary arts are more likely to end up struggling financially.
If you'd rather end up with one of the best-paying college degrees, you'll have to major in something that requires a lot of math classes.

Dear AUB Community,
With the announcement issued recently by AUB regarding the delayed implementation of the new tuition policy, I wish to address some remarks to all who hold this University dear.
Universities exist in part to champion the exercise of free speech and to empower the members of our community to use it. But the right to express one’s opinion requires judgment and consideration: free speech does not equate to free license. Last week the limits of tolerance and respect were violated in numerous ways.
I wish to salute those at AUB who upheld the best traditions of the University during three turbulent days: professors who endeavored to keep their classrooms open, though frequently subject to brute intimidation; students who exercised their freedom to get an education, though several were physically dragged out of class; staff members who crossed blockade lines in front of College Hall and other buildings, in the face of the crudest physical and verbal abuse.
Students of AUB: you are the hope of your parents and the future of this nation. This University offers you the chance to develop, with an unrivalled degree of freedom and critical thinking, the leadership skills you will be called upon to exercise for the greater good of your communities. Use this time wisely and well. I pledge to assist you in this process, involving students more closely in the informed decisions of the University, particularly in those areas such as financial aid, where you have such a great stake.
I wish to add a final thank-you to those students who, in spite of the week’s disruptions, forged ahead with a hugely successful AUB Outdoors event over this last weekend, inviting all of us—as well as our closest neighbors in Ras Beirut and beyond—to observe that AUB is indeed a place where community values can be celebrated.

In response to the request submitted by USFC to the new tuition policy:
While the University reiterates its commitment to its 15-credit policy in order to maintain academic excellence and increase financial opportunities for needy students to attend AUB, the University will start implementing the 15-credit policy only beginning with the undergraduate class of 2011-2012. During the coming academic year, 2010-2011, we will work towards enhancing the financial aid process.
Additionally, the University will guarantee a fixed 4% annual tuition increase for current and all students for 3 years, and will recommend to the Board of Trustees an extension of this guarantee for 2 additional years.
The budget allocated for financial aid continues to be used exclusively for financial aid. After the application of the new pricing policy, AUB will extend financial aid packages to cover the cost of the additional three credits for students eligible for financial aid, over and above the regular financial aid package.
The University will work with students to ensure and enhance the transparency of the financial aid system through the formation of an oversight committee made up of student members from USFC, faculty members and members of the administration. The committee’s work will be supported by:
a) An external consulting company to study the financial aid system at AUB and propose reform measures of the current system.
b) A thorough audit of the financial aid system by an external auditing firm that will provide assurance that the financial aid funds are being distributed equitably in accordance with the rules and regulations of the University. The oversight committee will receive the audit report and communicate it to the AUB community.
c) Regular reports from the oversight committee to be presented to all students via town meetings or emails (website), describing the process, the mishaps and proposed solutions.
d) For increased transparency, this committee will publish the number of students who apply for financial aid and the number of students who do not benefit from it.
e) The committee will create an appropriate and transparent appeal process for financial aid in case the students who apply do not benefit from it or find it unfair or unexplainable.
The Office of Development will work with the students, parents, and socially responsible businesses to raise additional scholarship funds over and above the current financial aid budget.
We are committed to maintaining open communication with the students in the days and weeks to come.

Dear AUB Students,
I’d like to congratulate the organizers of the demonstration yesterday for an event that was well organized and well executed, making a number of deep concerns to our students known to the administration. I especially appreciate the commitment by the organizers—representing the USFC and the Campaign for an Affordable Acceptable Education—that their aims are “voluntary, nonviolent, and progressive.” The event was carried out in a manner consistent with that pledge, and I applaud both the intention and the outcome; it reflects the best traditions of free speech and the dynamics of a responsive academic setting.
Yesterday I had the chance to talk with a number of students who had relevant questions about the new tuition policy. One question needs to be laid to rest immediately. A good number believed that they would have significantly higher tuition costs next year and were worried about how they or their families could afford it. Nothing could be further from the truth. For current students, tuition will be priced according to the present 12-hour credit system and AUB promises to freeze tuition increases at 4% for the next three years. We do not feel that we can change the rules of the game for students who are in the middle of a multi-year university commitment. This would not be fair to them or their parents.
Another young woman at FEA, knowing of our pledge to cover 75% of the added tuition burden for eligible students under the new pricing policy (again: which applies only for students enrolling for the first time in 2010) asked if we could cover that final last 25% with financial aid. I promised her we would review our options. We have been discussing that very question, and feel that we can soon propose a solution that will in fact cover 100% of the added burden for students who need it.
One slogan I began to hear yesterday is that the new tuition policy is just “stealing from the rich and giving to the poor.” Actually, that is a somewhat accurate, if sardonic, description of what direct financial aid is all about. It is what AUB and thousands of American universities and colleges have been doing for decades, and is the foundation for permitting needy students to study here. The system is simple: out of all tuition revenues received, a certain percentage is dedicated toward outright grants to offset the costs of tuition to students who otherwise could not afford to enroll here. AUB is one university in Lebanon that gives significant amounts of direct grant to its neediest students, rather than loans. If this system did not exist, AUB would be an institution for the purely elite, available only to those who could pay full freight—something none of us wants. Rather, we aspire truly to be a “college for all classes and conditions of men.” (And women.) Let me add that financial aid generated from tuition revenues (about 30% of the total) is supplemented generously by annual donations given by alumni and trustees, by endowed scholarship funds set up by donors and alumni chapters, and by government grants. In other words, the benefits of “stealing from the rich and giving to the poor” are enjoyed by all who use and enjoy our campus, by ensuring that we maintain a diverse student body represented by every region and socio-economic group of Lebanon, as well as countries beyond.
The administration has heard your concerns, and I was presented an eloquent statement from Jeffrey Karam, which I have read with interest. Yesterday Provost Dallal publicly declared that we are ready to meet with the organizers of the demonstration to discuss these issues. Yesterday I was also able to make the same pledge to USFC vice-president, Elias Ghanem, and others, that I am ready to begin discussions any time after 9 AM this morning. Open discussion is the essence of university life and the key to resolving the remaining issues. It is also essential that continuing engagement be “voluntary, nonviolent, and progressive,” so that those who wish to attend classes and go to work not be prevented from doing so.

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle’s Law that gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed or some variant.
One student, however, wrote the following:
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let’s look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that, if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell.
Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell. Because Boyle’s Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay constant, the volume of Hell must expand proportionately as souls are added.
This gives two possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.
2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.
So which is it?
If we accept the postulate given to me by Sandra during my freshman year, that “it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you,” and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is endothermic and has already frozen over.
The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is extinct…leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being - which explains why, last night, Sandra kept shouting “Oh God!”

A night of rose-filled terraces

After receiving an Honorary Doctorate degree from AUB on commencement day, Majida El-Roumi, the famous Lebanese icon and singer, returned to AUB on Sunday, the fifth of July for a concert which was long awaited for by her fans in AUB and all over Lebanon. It is worth mentioning that profits from this concert went to the AUB scholarship fund. In an interview contacted with her after the concert, El-Roumi said that this concert was dedicated to the students of AUB who would like to continue their education. Moreover, she was grateful for receiving an honorary degree from AUB and was delighted to see her family, friends and fans. She described that night as “one of the best days I have lived on this earth”.
More than 4,000 people were present in the Green Field that night, including several public figures. Among the VIPs were PM Fouad Sanioura, Dr. Samir Geagea, PM Najib Mikati, May Chidiac and several other ministers, journalists and influential figures who all seemed to enjoy the concert. The AUB press were the only journalists allowed backstage when Majida El-Roumi was carried up stage escorted by her manager, hair dresser and several other personnel who helped lift her long white elegant dress up the stairs.
President Peter Dorman commenced the concert with a short word welcoming El-Roumi to AUB. The songs were organized in chronological order while Majida El-Roumi told bits and pieces of her biography to the audience. She sang more than ten of her most famous songs, and also medleys of heritage songs that pleased the audience. She was accompanied by a full orchestra, with the famous musician Michel Fadel on the piano. The crowd was energetic and responsive, especially towards the end where the songs became more lively. Groups of “dabke” dancers were clustered on the edges of Green Field when the songs became patriotic.
In an interview with PM Sanioura, he said: “Tonight’s concert was very successful, and I personally enjoyed it very much. Majida is a great and talented artist who have made Lebanon proud and raised its name internationally.”
This has not been the first fundraising concert for scholarship funds by Majida El-Roumi in AUB. The last concert was held in Forum Du Beirut on November 26, 2005. But without doubt, this concert was more successful, perhaps because of a more stable political situation, breezy summer weather and perfect timing.

A night of rose-filled terraces

After receiving an Honorary Doctorate degree from AUB on commencement day, Majida El-Roumi, the famous Lebanese icon and singer, returned to AUB on Sunday, the fifth of July for a concert which was long awaited for by her fans in AUB and all over Lebanon. It is worth mentioning that profits from this concert went to the AUB scholarship fund. In an interview contacted with her after the concert, El-Roumi said that this concert was dedicated to the students of AUB who would like to continue their education. Moreover, she was grateful for receiving an honorary degree from AUB and was delighted to see her family, friends and fans. She described that night as “one of the best days I have lived on this earth”.
President Peter Dorman commenced the concert with a short word welcoming El-Roumi to AUB. The songs were organized in chronological order while Majida El-Roumi told bits and pieces of her biography to the audience. She sang more than ten of her most famous songs, and also medleys of heritage songs that pleased the audience. She was accompanied by a full orchestra, with the famous musician Michel Fadel on the piano. The crowd was energetic and responsive, especially towards the end where the songs became more lively. Groups of “dabke” dancers were clustered on the edges of Green Field when the songs became patriotic. In an interview with PM Sanioura, he said: “Tonight’s concert was very successful, and I personally enjoyed it very much. Majida is a great and talented artist who have made Lebanon proud and raised its name internationally.”
This has not been the first fundraising concert for scholarship funds by Majida El-Roumi in AUB. The last concert was held in Forum Du Beirut on November 26, 2005. But without doubt, this concert was more successful, perhaps because of a more stable political situation, breezy summer weather and perfect timing.
