The CASULO is a room packed into a 90 x 120 cm box. It includes a wardrobe, desk/table, cabinet, rotating and height-adjustable desk chair, two stools, a bed and mattress, and set of shelves. It's not necessarily anything to impress a lady, but great for the person that squats in abandoned apartment buildings and may need to move at a moment's notice. Apparently it takes about 7 minutes from start to finish. And you know what else takes 7 minutes from start to finish? Making sweet love to my girlfriend. Twice. She doesn't call me Don Geekologie Juan for nothing. Okay, I make her call me that.

On July 2, we will be hosting a one day event in London along with Reuters AlertNet to chew over how hunger is reported.
Our executive director Josette Sheeran will give a keynote speech, followed by four panel discussions exploring hot issues including the challenges of operating in violent contexts like Somalia and the future of food aid. Participants will include WFP staff, prominent media commentators, senior representatives from British-based non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and think-tanks, and journalists who specialise in humanitarian stories.

It seems that there is a common misconception going on on campus and elsewhere that I am the hidden person behind "The Worst of AUB" blog that contains criticizing articles, photos and videos about AUB.
This is to denounce any involvement in the creation, publishing or maintaining the mentioned blog. Yesterday, I received an e-mail from the administrator of the blog "AUBite" who wishes to remain anonymous (I don't blame him/her). The purpose of this e-mail was only to request publishing rights of one of my copyrighted articles, which I granted.
Although my articles are being republished there, I take no responsibility of the other content published by this blog, nor any material that may not "uphold the spirit of AUB."
I urge those who are making false accusations to get the facts straight before spreading rumors. I value my positions and current jobs and I do not intend to lose any of them because a someone couldn't connect the dots correctly.

Today in Operations Management class, the professor showed us a video called "The Hidden Face of Globalization". This video shows how humans are abused in developing countries by western corporations to do all the labor is sweat-shop conditions, violence and being paid less 3-5 dollars per week. Off course, in class we were focusing on the business concept of sweat-shops, the efficiency, the processes, the decisions, etc.. but we did not focus on the ethical perspective.I thought it would be very interesting to share this video with my readers to make them aware of what goes on in the world. This should make you think twice before buying a standardized product from your favorite brand company.

I was surprised to find that Mind Soup was featured in the June 2010 issue for the Lebanese Bloggers Convention at AUB post. Too bad that this event was cancelled due to "special circumstances". Anyway, I will still be working for this event to happen and updates will be posted soon.

Serial Killer Love

They say they love me.
They might as well shoot me in the head
with their careless cheese cake covered guns.
Ironic as it may be,
they stand there for a short eternity
and watch
as I bleed drops of dark
cranberry-filled ungratefulness,
or at least
they would think I am ungrateful.
And still they love me,
off course they do;
un-humane love is what that is:
a canine-attacking-a-juicy-bloody-steak kind of love.
Dare they admit it?
They say denial is the first step
towards recovery,
recovery of despair.
Desperate
I am not.
over-zealous? Maybe.
over-emotional? Probably.
They say they love me,
on some tragic highly-twisted level
I know they do.
A butcher guards his bloody
knife, they love me
A serial killer hunts his thankless bastard
prey, they love me
A dictator mercilessly hanging the black
devils that blindly comply to his ungracious rulings, they love me
Oh
how they love me.
At least now I know
I am not standing here
on my own
bleeding out emotions
full of fake nothingness.
Transparent images reflecting on
the non-flat screen of my television
bring dazzling color to the heart stains
on the faded whiteness of my walls.
I know they love me,
acid raindrops of my affection sipping on foam
boards which conceal slaughtered bunnies, ponies and pink dolphins,
they love me.
But later
or sooner,
resentment threatens to be an oversight
dangling on the vines of my apathy
"Go ahead and throw your life away".
My life seems as clueless
as sugar-coated and gold-plated
as the queen of England,
but I will not burn inside
for giving the benefit of the doubt
to undeserving kings.
Shall I call it hypocrisy?
or is it too harsh?
will that hurt their diamond hearts
and platinum veins?
or shall I just retaliate with a smile?
a smile as oxygenated as lungs of the earth;
pretending seems a very logical approach.
I do have a very Mexican imagination,
but I do not want to end up with flying artichokes and talking tangerines.
They love me,
I have to face the non-alternative
non-country music
that lingers
towards its inevitable fate
under the moonlight of my earlobes.
I have to return this favor of marble love.
I have to be a serial killer.

As you might know, I have been working on poetry book for several months now. Today, I thought I would share with you a sneak peak from my unpublished material.
My book is still untitled, but this poem is from a chapter entitled "Disappointments of me". I hope you enjoy it, and I would really appreciate your feedback.

The turritopsis nutricula species of jellyfish may be the only animal in the world to have truly discovered the fountain of youth.
Why I am particularly interested about this? Well, partly because I am majoring in biology and have taken a whole course about lower invertebrates such as jellyfish and other slimy animals, but the huge part is because of the huge capability this animal presents to the scientific world!
If scientists could discover the mechanism of this reversion of cells, this can advance the medical field tremendously, possibly by regenerating failing organ cells such as liver cells, heart cells or even brain cells.

Since it is capable of cycling from a mature adult stage to an immature polyp stage and back again, there may be no natural limit to its life span. Scientists say the hydrozoan jellyfish is the only known animal that can repeatedly turn back the hands of time and revert to its polyp state (its first stage of life).
The key lies in a process called transdifferentiation, where one type of cell is transformed into another type of cell. Some animals can undergo limited transdifferentiation and regenerate organs, such as salamanders, which can regrow limbs. Turritopsi nutricula, on the other hand, can regenerate its entire body over and over again. Researchers are studying the jellyfish to discover how it is able to reverse its aging process.
Because they are able to bypass death, the number of individuals is spiking. They're now found in oceans around the globe rather than just in their native Caribbean waters. "We are looking at a worldwide silent invasion," says Dr. Maria Miglietta of the Smithsonian Tropical Marine Institute.
